Photo Composition

When it comes to snapping a photo, composition is key. Make sure your photo has a main focal point that immediately draws the viewer’s eye. Play around with the angles you use to shoot the photo, so that you have different perspectives of the same subject. Experimenting with the composition of your photo can result in unique or eye-catching photos.

If you prefer your photo to be symmetrical, we recommend using the grid feature on your phone camera. You can activate this in your camera settings. This allows you to chart the composition of your photo more methodically, and save you from having to adjust your photos later.

Capture The Light

Besides composition, you must pay attention to lighting. When it comes to photos, natural light always works best. However, if need be, you can use the flash that comes with your phone. If that still doesn’t improve the lighting of your photo, here are a few tricks to consider.

Your phone comes with built-in tools that you can use to enhance the lighting of your photos. First, you can change the exposure of your photo by using the manual exposure tool for your phone camera. While taking a photo with an iOS phone, just put the camera in focus and swipe up or down – this will bring up the sun icon, which you can move to change your photo’s exposure. For Android users, you may have this feature under the name of “pro mode” – otherwise you’ll have to download a camera app from the Google Play store that has this.

If changing the exposure isn’t helping, you can also use photo filters. Your phone has a few built-in photo filters. But if you’re more selective for your filters, check out popular photo apps such as Instagram.

If you’re trying to re-light a portrait of someone, look into popular photo editing apps such as AirBrush – they have a premium feature that allows you to re-light portraits.

Play Around With Your Camera Mode

Finally, there are different modes on your camera to help you take a better photo. One of the most talked-about features of newer phones is portrait mode ( or live/selective focus on Android phones), which softens the background of a photo so that the person in it is in hyper-focus. It’s great for selfies or flattering images of people.

If you want to capture an image in motion, use burst mode to capture a long series of images within a short amount of time. Burst mode is great for capturing any physical actions that you may not be able to capture in the camera’s standard mode. Activating burst mode is super easy, all you have to do is keep your finger on the shutter button when you take a photo. Your phone will keep taking photos until you release your finger. Both iOS and most Android phones offer this feature.

When you want to take high contrast photos, then considering using HDR mode, or High Dynamic Range, to maximize the colors in your photo. For iOS, HDR usually activates automatically when the image calls for it, so you don’t have to worry about activating it for every photo that you take. Most Android phones have this mode, so Android users just have to select it when taking a photo.

Finally, there’s always the classic timer mode on your phone. Timer mode is best in situations when you want your camera to take the photo automatically after a few seconds – so you don’t have to physically be there to touch the shutter button. You can use this if you want to include yourself in your photo.
