How to set up and optimize your Twitter business page for success

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

Twitter can help small businesses connect with potential customers, build brand awareness, and promote their product or service. This fast-paced social media platform is a great tool to help you market your business, but first you'll need to make sure you optimize your Twitter business page for success.

First things first: set up a Twitter business page

Go to Twitter and click "Sign Up" to create a new account. Follow the prompts and enter your name and phone number/email address. Be sure to use your business name and business phone number or email address for this account.

Now that you've signed up for Twitter, read on for six ways to optimize your Twitter business page for success.

The Ripl Twitter page includes all necessary brand information including logo, banner, bio, website link, etc.
The Ripl Twitter page

Name + @username

You have the option to put your name and a unique Twitter handle, or @username. As you can see for Ripl's Twitter account, our name is "Ripl App", while our username or Twitter handle is "@Ripl_App". It's best to put your business name as your page name. Note that you are limited to 20 characters.

A Twitter handle is the unique username that each person or business uses on Twitter. The first username you want to use may not be available. Just be sure to pick something that's easy to remember and applicable to your business. A common practice for those who have username troubles include inputting adjectives or other applicable words. For example, a retail business titled "Lulus" could make their username @ShopLulus or @LulusShop. If Lulus was a restaurant, they could create a username like @EatLulus or @LulusRestaurant. And if Lulus was a real estate business, @PropertieswithLulus or @LulusHomes might be viable options.

Banner image

The banner image at the top of your profile is one of the first things people will see when they navigate to your Twitter page. Choose an image that is representative of your brand.

Profile Image

A best practice is to use your company logo as your profile image. It will be cropped to a circle on the app, so double check that it displays correctly in this shape.

Page Link

Include a link to your website, ordering platform, or reservation page on your profile so people can easily become a customer.

Description / Bio

You have 160 characters to tell visitors who you are, what you do, and why they should care. Use emojis to draw interest and include any hashtags you’d like to be associated with your brand.

Pinned Tweet

Twitter allows you to pin one tweet at the top of your profile. This tweet stays at the top of your profile even when you continue tweeting. Pinning a tweet to the top of your profile is a great way to highlight new product, a promotion, or other timely material. Be sure to change it out regularly!
